History
Intent
History is a subject that teaches about events which have taken place in the past. It can help explain how past events shape the memories and lives of people living today. It enables children to understand the complexity of people and societies within Britain (and globally) throughout the years as well as appreciating the changes in society’s values and beliefs over time. History encourages children to understand their own identity through learning about their past and allows children to be critical thinkers with an open mind about the world and past events. Historical awareness promotes responsible citizenship. Considering how people lived and behaved in the past gives children the opportunity to make better life choices for a more tolerant society today.
Our aim is to allow all children to access, engage and immerse themselves within history through a variety of methods. We encourage children to develop their understanding of historical enquiry, by building their confidence in questioning and analysing historical sources and artefacts.
Through history lessons, children become critical thinkers, holding their own valued opinions supported by research and evidence. We aim to provide children with the tools to enable them to become passionate historians, who can take their own lead of enquiry and know how to compare evidence and to understand bias when analysing sources.
