Grove Primary School

Music

Intent

Our vision for music at Grove Primary School is for all children to feel eager to develop their musical skills and knowledge through inspiring and creative lessons. We aim to provide our children with opportunities to showcase their talent and celebrate their individuality by performing music for parents and the local community.

Music Curriculum

As part of our Music Curriculum, all pupils take part in a carefully sequenced programme of lessons following the Charanga scheme of work. Every class receives a weekly music lesson delivered by a specialist music teacher. Each six-week unit focuses on a different theme, allowing children to explore a wide range of musical styles and skills. In addition, pupils take part in weekly singing assemblies throughout the year. Together, these experiences ensure that children from EYFS to Year 6 receive between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes of high-quality musical learning each week.

Please see the table below for details of the units covered in each half term.

How parents can connect with their children at home.

If you’re looking for a way to connect with your children, music is a great option!

Here are a few tips for connecting with your children over music:

  1.      Create a family playlist: Add some of your favorite songs and your children’s favorites to a shared playlist that everyone can listen to. This can be a great way to discover new music that everyone enjoys.
  1.      Listen to music from different cultures: Listening to music from other cultures can be a great way to learn about new people and places. It can also be a bonding experience for families.
  1.      Introduce your kids to music from your childhood: If you have some favorite songs from when you were a child, share them with your children. This way of introducing them to new genres of music and a great way of bonding with your children over special memories!
  1.      Talk about the lyrics: As you’re listening to music together, take some time to talk about the lyrics. This allows you to discuss important topics such as respecting each other and body image.

Extra- Curricular opportunities – Redbridge Music Service

At Grove Primary School, we are proud to work in partnership with Redbridge Music Service to give our pupils a wealth of exciting musical opportunities beyond their regular Charanga lessons. Children can choose to take weekly individual or paired instrumental lessons, with expert tuition available in piano, guitar, violin, flute, cello, trumpet, cornet, trombone, drums, and singing. These lessons inspire confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.

Our vibrant school choir, led by our talented music specialist Ian Sanderson, is open to pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 and currently welcomes around 30 enthusiastic singers. The choir meets for an hour each week to rehearse an uplifting repertoire drawn from a wide variety of musical styles, traditions, and genres. Performing together helps our children build teamwork, self-expression, and a true joy in making music.
